Start by specifying true Ceylon cinnamon

Ceylon cinnamon is produced from Cinnamomum verum and is commercially different from cassia products sold in many markets. A serious request should state the botanical identity, physical form and intended use. “Cinnamon” by itself is too broad for a dependable quotation.

Sri Lanka’s Export Development Board describes four major quill grade families—Alba, Continental, Mexican and Hamburg—with sub-grades used in trade. Diameter, appearance and the number of inner layers influence classification. Powder, cut pieces, featherings, chips and essential oils follow different specifications and should not be compared as though they were the same product.

Choose the grade around the application

Alba is visually fine and often positioned at the premium end, but it is not automatically the best commercial choice for every buyer. A food manufacturer milling spice into a blend may value chemical, microbiological and particle specifications more than perfect quill appearance. A premium retail tube, by contrast, may depend heavily on uniform visual presentation.

  • Retail quills: define grade, length, diameter range, colour tolerance and retail packing.
  • Food-service cuts: define cut length, foreign matter tolerance and pack size.
  • Powder: define mesh size, moisture, microbiological limits and treatment policy.
  • Oil or extract: define plant part, composition/test method, pack material and intended application.

MOQ is a production question, not just a price question

Minimum order varies with grade availability, processing, packaging and certification. A supplier may accept a modest bulk carton of standard quills but require a larger run for custom printed retail packs. Ask for both a sample/trial MOQ and the normal commercial MOQ.

When comparing quotations, clarify whether the price is EXW, FOB Colombo, CFR, CIF or another Incoterm. Include packing, palletisation, testing, document and freight assumptions. A lower ex-factory price can become the more expensive landed option.

Cinnamon buyer checklist

Before an order, verify the legal supplier identity and manufacturing/export role. Ask for recent, product-relevant certificates rather than accepting a logo list without scope or expiry dates. Destination-country rules may require pesticide residue, microbiological, allergen, irradiation, fumigation, traceability or organic documentation.

  • Botanical name and country of origin
  • Grade/form and written specification
  • Representative sample and retained approval sample
  • Batch traceability and certificate of analysis
  • Packing material, net weight and carton dimensions
  • Applicable food-safety, organic or customer-specific certification
  • Incoterm, port, lead time, payment terms and quotation validity

Frequently asked questions

Is Alba always the right grade to import?

No. Alba is a fine premium quill grade, but the right grade depends on appearance, use, target price, availability and customer expectations.

What is a sensible first-order strategy?

Approve a representative sample and written specification, then place a controlled trial order before committing to a large annual programme.

Should I rely on an exporter-directory listing as verification?

Use it as evidence that supports your checks, not as the complete check. Confirm the legal entity, current capability, certification scope, facility, product and commercial terms directly.

Authoritative sources

Sources support the sector background and official checks. Supplier capability must still be confirmed for the specific order.
